The special power of seaweed
Seaweed is the collective name for a group of unrelated, large algae that live in salt or brackish water and are also called marine algae or macro-algae. They occur in all the world's oceans and are also often found at river mouths. Some species can attach themselves to a hard surface, others float freely in the sea. There are even seaweed species that can grow up to 60 meters long! Seaweeds are extremely strong and can withstand both sunlight and exposure to air as well as the violent wave movements of the water. They are the most resilient and fertile plants on earth, which occur in all kinds of shapes, sizes and structures, from thread- or spaghetti-shaped to leaf-shaped or endlessly branched. They are even the plants on earth that contain the most minerals, since they absorb minerals directly from the ocean and can store them in their cell structure. In this respect, seaweeds have unique properties compared to land plants simply because they grow in the sea. Seaweeds are rich in minerals and trace elements such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, iron and iodine and contain various trace elements. Seaweed is also a source of antioxidants, prebiotic fibers, vitamins A, C and E and vegetable proteins. It is therefore not surprising that in many countries the belief that seaweed can contribute to good health has been around since time immemorial!
Seaweed as our past and our future
The history of seaweed as a food, medicine, tool and care product goes back thousands of years and although it has also been used and eaten in Europe and North America, it is particularly widespread in Asian culture. For example, it was used as a therapeutic agent 5,000 years ago by Emperor Shen Nung and archaeological evidence from Chile shows that seaweed was used by humans as early as 12,000 years before Christ. Most researchers also agree that seaweed was essential for the development of our brain and nervous system, as our ancestors could only find the fatty acids needed for this on the coast, where they had access to fish and shellfish, which in turn obtained the fatty acids from algae such as seaweed. Seaweed is now gaining popularity all over the world, not only because it is rich in nutrients, but also because it offers many environmental benefits. After all, it is extremely nutritious, grows easily and rapidly and can be grown or cultivated in almost any country in the world without having a major impact on existing ecosystems. Adding seaweed to our daily diet is not only good for our health, it also offers potential solutions to the world food problem. In addition, it can be used to generate energy and to make biodegradable packaging material, thus contributing to a sustainable world.
