Libido

The word libido comes from Latin and means desire, impulse or longing. Nowadays, we often use the word to refer to the sexual need or the desire for physical pleasure. In practice, the word is still taboo, despite the groundbreaking work of Sigmund Freud some 150 years ago. He made sure that sexuality became a topic of discussion and also gave the word libido a much broader meaning. For him, libido stood for the energy that comes from impulses or instincts that guide our behavior. It was therefore about a much broader striving for satisfaction, not only in the sexual area. His contemporary Carl Gustav Jung desexualized the concept even further to the meaning of a more general life force. Nowadays, however, the word is mainly used in the much narrower sense of sexual pleasure. In our view, however, it is valuable to continue to see the concept of libido in a broader context and therefore to strive for good overall physical and mental health and a healthy energy level.

Can you increase your libido yourself?

On the internet, you are bombarded with stories about food and natural remedies that increase your libido. Oysters, champagne and chocolate are said to be natural aphrodisiacs. But is it really that easy to increase your libido yourself? The idea that oysters are an aphrodisiac is not unfounded either. Oysters are particularly rich in the mineral zinc, which is good for sperm quality and contributes to normal fertility. Furthermore, ashwagandha or Indian ginseng also has a beneficial effect on male fertility*, but neither champagne nor chocolate has ever been scientifically proven to increase libido.

What is important for a healthy libido?

Aphrodisiacs don’t always seem to do what they’re said to do, but fortunately, a healthy libido doesn’t just depend on aphrodisiac foods. There are many ways to increase your libido. Whether you’re a woman, a man or otherwise, your libido depends on factors such as age, health, climate, temperature, atmosphere, stress, blood circulation, nutrition and lifestyle. Want to boost your libido? Then it can help to exercise or play sports more, as this improves blood circulation and stimulates hormone production. Healthy eating is also important, as sugar, white pasta and other carbohydrates cause insulin to rise: a hormone that processes sugar, but also causes testosterone levels to drop! Stress also causes insulin to rise, so avoiding stress and getting a good night’s sleep will also benefit your health.
