Libido
The word libido comes from Latin and means desire, impulse or longing. Nowadays, we often use the word to refer to the sexual need or the desire for physical pleasure. In practice, the word is still taboo, despite the groundbreaking work of Sigmund Freud some 150 years ago. He made sure that sexuality became a topic of discussion and also gave the word libido a much broader meaning. For him, libido stood for the energy that comes from impulses or instincts that guide our behavior. It was therefore about a much broader striving for satisfaction, not only in the sexual area. His contemporary Carl Gustav Jung desexualized the concept even further to the meaning of a more general life force. Nowadays, however, the word is mainly used in the much narrower sense of sexual pleasure. In our view, however, it is valuable to continue to see the concept of libido in a broader context and therefore to strive for good overall physical and mental health and a healthy energy level.
