Rediscovery of methylene blue
Methylene blue was first synthesized in 1876. It is a diaminophenothiazine that, among other things, influences electron transport in the body. Methylene blue can enter intracellular compartments such as mitochondria, lysosomes and cell nuclei. Methylene blue is a powerful antioxidant in nanomolar concentrations that visibly reduces the skin aging process in several ways. Dr. Cao's discovery of the effects of methylene blue on skin aging was published in Nature Scientific Reports and was widely praised by the scientific community. She was also a finalist at the University of Maryland for Invention of the Year. Her discovery was featured in many major media outlets, such as Cosmetics Design and Allure.
Caring for our skin
The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the human body and is psychologically important for the body image of men and women. The skin offers protection for the muscles, bones, blood vessels and organs. It keeps the body together and ensures that we do not evaporate immediately. The skin also secretes toxins that immediately kill bacteria that do not belong in our body. We often try to make the skin more beautiful with make-up and care products. An aging skin has well-known, visible biological characteristics. There are two different types of skin aging, intrinsic and extrinsic, caused by physiological and environmental factors.
Oxidative stress and skin aging
Intrinsic skin aging reflects the naturally occurring changes in the skin as we age. Extrinsic skin aging is an accelerated form of aging due to exposure of the skin to environmental factors, such as smoke, sunlight or air pollution. Although both forms are different, they have in common that skin aging is partly due to the oxidative stress of free radicals. The use of antioxidants in skin care products, such as day creams, is generally accepted as an effective approach to visibly reduce the aging process of the skin.
