Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that occurs in small balls in our bloodstream. The balls are surrounded by a layer of protein, which ensures that cholesterol can be transported properly through the blood. Cholesterol is often known as a 'bad' substance, but the body actually needs cholesterol to function properly. It is a building block for cells and hormones, it provides energy for metabolism and it plays a role in the production of bile. A small part of the required cholesterol is ingested through food, but most is produced in the liver. There, exactly enough cholesterol is normally produced for a properly functioning body.

Types of cholesterol

Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two main body fats and cholesterol can be divided into LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is also popularly called 'bad' cholesterol, because with high LDL cholesterol you have a greater chance of narrowing in your arteries. Usually you only hear about LDL as 'bad cholesterol', but there are more cholesterol particles of importance. VLDL, IDL and Lp(a) also contain cholesterol and contribute to atherosclerosis. Together they are also called non-HDL. HDL cholesterol is the counterpart of this group and is also called 'good' cholesterol, because this variant protects you against cardiovascular diseases. HDL particles ensure that excess cholesterol is broken down in the liver. Your blood also contains triglycerides, body fats that mainly come from your food. They are used by the body as an energy source, but high levels of triglycerides have also been linked to atherosclerosis.

What should you do to lower your cholesterol?

You can lower your cholesterol with a healthy diet, losing weight if you are overweight and getting enough exercise. Natural substances can also help. When you have your cholesterol measured, your LDL and HDL cholesterol and your triglycerides are important. It concerns the total values and the ratio between LDL and HDL. By paying close attention to your diet, you can lower your cholesterol yourself or keep it at a normal level. Quitting smoking, losing weight if necessary, getting enough exercise and consuming less saturated fats are the general recommendations for people who want to maintain healthy cholesterol. Lowering your cholesterol? You can do it yourself with a healthy lifestyle!
