Eyes

The human eye is a fascinating and very complex organ that works closely with the brain. After all, our eyes are the senses that receive light from our environment and then pass it on to our brain in the form of signals. There, these signals are converted into observations, after which they can be stored in the memory. In order to be able to 'see', the brain is just as important as the eyes. Incidentally, the eyes not only play an important role in our vision, they are also important for the regulation of day and night rhythms in our body. For example, approximately 50% of the circuits in the brain are influenced by light, which means, among other things, that the eyes have a direct effect on the metabolism. It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul; there is no consensus on the existence or non-existence of the soul, but the fact is that our eyes are the windows through which our brains can perceive the world around us.

The anatomy of the eye

The anatomical structure of the eye consists of, among other things, the eye wall, the cornea, the retina, the iris, the pupil, the lens and the optic nerve. The eye actually consists of a space that is enclosed by a sturdy wall. This outside of the eyeball is covered with conjunctiva. Underneath that lies the white of the eye, also called the sclera. At the front of the eye, the white of the eye bulges outwards slightly, that part is called the cornea. The cornea is transparent, which ensures that light can fall well on the retina at the back of the eye. Behind the cornea lies the iris, which gives color to our eye and which regulates how much light can enter our eye via the pupil. The pupil is an opening through which light rays can pass. Behind the pupil is the lens, which bundles the light and focuses the image that falls on the retina by becoming more convex or flatter. The retina contains light-sensitive cells that ensure that we can see well in both light and dark environments. The macula is a spot in the middle of the retina where we can see most clearly. The light rays that fall on the retina then travel in the form of electrical signals through the optic nerve to the brain.

Tips for healthy eyes

Exercise is essential to keep your eyes healthy. After all, it ensures a good blood supply to the retina. You can also support your eyes with certain nutrients and vitamins and contribute to keeping your eyes healthy.
