Liver

The liver is an important and versatile organ located in the upper right side of your abdominal cavity next to your stomach and plays an important role in metabolism. The organ weighs about 1.5 kilograms, is brown in color and is divided into a large right and a smaller left lobe. The liver is further divided into smaller 'lobes' or cell formations, in which specialized cells are located that perform the various functions of the liver, such as detoxification of the body, hormone production and the production of biochemicals. Everything that enters our body through our inhalation, food or through the skin always passes through the liver via the bloodstream, where the blood is continuously filtered for waste products. After the skin, the liver is the heaviest organ and the liver is the most versatile organ in the human body after the brain. The lower ribs of the chest provide protection for the organ.

The versatility of the liver

The liver is a complex organ that can be compared to a complicated factory. The organ plays a role in more than 500 different digestive processes, such as protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, the production of bile, the storage of iron and certain vitamins, the production of important proteins, the processing and removal of waste products and the production and storage of energy and fuels. In order to be able to perform all these different functions, there are two separate systems in your liver, namely the blood vessel system and the bile duct system. The special thing about the liver is that the organ is able to grow back and grow into a complete liver if, for example, it has been partially removed. Your liver therefore has an enormous reserve capacity, which only shows how indispensable this organ is for a human body!

Tips to support your liver itself

Many people want to give their hard-working liver a helping hand. Fortunately, you can cleanse your liver yourself in various natural ways. Pills, powders and drinks do not necessarily have to be used for this, although there are of course many liver-supporting supplements on the market that are indeed natural and of good quality. In order to support your liver, it is particularly important to avoid certain things. For example, eating too much processed food, drinking too much alcohol and exposure to chemical products or pollution can cause the liver to become overloaded and therefore function less well.

Liver Supporting Herbs and Nutrients

Your liver has an important function as a great cleanser of the body, but your liver itself also needs cleansing. Drinking a lot of water supports the cleansing of both your liver and your kidneys and the nutrient choline also contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function. Some herbs are also known to support the liver. The spice turmeric, for example, has an antioxidant effect and is good for digestion and for the liver*. Milk thistle and artichoke also support the cleansing effect of the liver and have an antioxidant effect to protect healthy cells*.
