Candida, intestines and balance
In a healthy body, there is a dynamic balance between the mucous membranes, healthy intestinal bacteria and yeasts, and Candida in its most natural form, namely as yeast, can do little harm. The Candida yeasts are then kept under control by benign intestinal bacteria and remain within the intestines. However, various factors can disrupt this natural balance and Candida gets the chance to mutate into a fungus, which can possibly cause health problems in the body, such as unformed stools, fatigue, skin conditions or infections of the vagina or oral mucosa.
How does a fungal infection develop?
The immune system plays an important role in maintaining the balance of the intestinal flora and thus in preventing a fungal infection. It is therefore very important to maintain and support your immune system through a healthy lifestyle. In addition to reduced resistance, there are other possible factors that can contribute to the excessive growth of Candida, such as the use of medications such as antacids or corticosteroids, the use of the contraceptive pill or antibiotics, chronic stress, starchy and sugary foods, obesity, diabetes, intestinal disorders and excessive alcohol consumption. A Candida treatment may sometimes be necessary to restore the balance in the body.
Candida albicans
The Candida family includes many species and only a few species can cause symptoms of a fungal infection. Candida albicans is the yeast that is most often found in humans and is therefore the cause of a fungal infection in the body in the vast majority of cases. We also speak of candidiasis or a candida infection. Candida albicans does not cause any problems under normal circumstances, but as an opportunistic micro-organism it can quickly transform and disrupt the balance in your intestines if given the chance. You can usually combat or treat Candida quite easily, as it is generally a harmless infection that is not so much dangerous, but annoying. In exceptional cases, a Candida infection can enter the bloodstream and cause a generalized infection.
Tips for Candida
Although everyone is unique and there is no clear advice regarding diet or lifestyle, there are a number of guidelines that you can follow to keep your body and intestines in balance and that are generally recommended during a Candida treatment. For example, it is good to avoid added sugars, including fructose, honey and milk sugars, because they can form a breeding ground for unwanted fungi. Furthermore, pork, dairy products and mold-containing products such as mushrooms and blue cheese are also discouraged. Products such as garlic and turmeric are good for you during this period.
