FAQ
What is Ancestral Protein Powder and how does it differ from whey or plant protein?

Ancestral Protein Powder is a protein isolate from bone broth of grass-fed cattle (21.8 g per scoop), supplemented with Celtic sea minerals and a 'regenerative superfood blend' of 570 mg of freeze-dried organs (liver, kidney, heart, pancreas, spleen), bone minerals (MCHA) and the mushrooms reishi, chaga, cordyceps and lion's mane. Whey is a milk protein (dairy), plant protein is usually pea or rice; bone broth protein is dairy-free, lactose-free and rich in collagen amino acids such as glycine and proline. Flavour: Vanilla Chai. Ancestral Supplements uses only organs from cattle (and, for the thymus, sheep) that graze outdoors all year round in New Zealand and Australia: grass-fed and grass-finished, with no added hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or GMOs.

How much protein and how many calories does a scoop contain?

One scoop (23.1 g) provides 20 g of protein, 90 kcal, around 1 g of fat, virtually no carbohydrates and no sugar (sweetened with monk fruit). A 689 g pack contains around 30 scoops. The protein is rich in collagen and therefore not as complete in essential amino acids as whey; as a supplement to a protein-rich diet with meat, fish or eggs, that is not a problem.

How do I use the powder?

Mix 1 scoop (23.1 g) with 350 to 470 ml of water, milk or plant milk, or add it to a smoothie, yoghurt or porridge; it dissolves well in a shaker. Take it after exercise, as breakfast or as a protein-rich snack. You can also stir it into hot drinks, but do not boil it: heat does nothing to the minerals, but the organs and mushrooms then lose some of their value.

Does this protein powder contain dairy, gluten or allergens?

No: it is free from dairy, lactose, gluten, soy, egg, nuts and sugar. It contains beef (bone broth and organs) and mushrooms; not suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Contains natural flavourings (vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom) and monk fruit extract.

Why does it contain organs and mushrooms?

The 570 mg superfood blend turns the protein powder into a 'nose-to-tail' meal: the organs provide vitamin A, B12, haem iron and cofactors in small, mild amounts, and the four mushrooms (reishi, chaga, cordyceps, lion's mane) provide beta-glucans. The amount of liver per scoop is small (an estimated 100 to 150 mg), so no vitamin A burden; you can use it alongside Beef Liver.

Is it suitable for children, during pregnancy and for athletes?

Yes; it is food. For children, half a scoop is enough. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, in consultation with your midwife; the product contains no caffeine (except the Mocha flavour, with instant coffee) and no sweeteners other than monk fruit. Athletes use it after training; it contains no substances on the doping list.

What is the difference between the flavours and compared with collagen powder?

Vanilla, Chocolate, Vanilla Chai and Mocha contain the same protein and the same superfood blend; only the flavourings differ (Chocolate with alkalised cocoa, Mocha with instant coffee and therefore a little caffeine). Collagen hydrolysate is pure collagen protein without organs, minerals or mushrooms and usually unsweetened; Ancestral Protein Powder is a complete shake.

How do I store the powder?

Store the tub tightly closed, cool, dry and dark, with a dry scoop; the powder attracts moisture. Unopened, it keeps until the date on the label; once opened, use it up within 3 months.
