FAQ
What is freeze-dried beef adrenal and why does it also contain liver?

Beef Adrenal contains 125 mg of freeze-dried adrenal (cortex and medulla) and 375 mg of liver per capsule. The adrenal glands produce the stress hormones cortisol, adrenaline and aldosterone as well as the precursors of the sex hormones; freeze-dried adrenal tissue provides the adrenal-specific peptides, cofactors and enzymes, and the liver supplies the nutrients the adrenals use heavily: vitamin C, B5, B12, copper and vitamin A. People choose it, following the 'like supports like' principle, during periods of prolonged stress, fatigue or a feeling of 'burnout'. Ancestral Supplements uses only organs from cattle (and, for the thymus, sheep) that graze outdoors all year round in New Zealand and Australia: grass-fed and grass-finished, with no added hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or GMOs. The organs are freeze-dried raw (not heated, not defatted), so the heat-sensitive vitamins, enzymes and fat-soluble nutrients are preserved. There are no fillers, flow agents, stearates or anti-caking agents; the only addition is the beef gelatine capsule. Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory and the company operates under GMP certification.

Does this product contain cortisol or adrenaline?

Freeze-dried adrenal may contain traces of the natural adrenal hormones, but not a pharmacological amount; it is food, not hydrocortisone. Because it is nonetheless an active glandular tissue, sensitive people notice a mildly stimulating effect. That is why you build up gradually and take it in the morning.

How do I dose Beef Adrenal?

Start with 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast (or half a capsule, opened into food) and build up by one capsule every 3 days until you reach the dose that feels right; most users settle on 2 to 3 capsules per day, and the label states a maximum of 6. Take the last capsule before 2 p.m., otherwise it may disturb your sleep. If you have a sensitive stomach: always with food and a large glass of water. At 3 per day, a jar of 180 capsules lasts 2 months.

What should I watch out for? Signs of too much

Restlessness, palpitations, headache, trouble falling asleep or a 'wired' feeling point to too high a dose; lower it or skip a day. Some people whose energy reserves are depleted actually feel more tired in the first few days; in that case do not increase, but stay on the low dose for a week. If you have high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, hyperthyroidism or use corticosteroids (prednisone, hydrocortisone), only use it in consultation with your doctor.

What is the difference from Seeking Health Adrenal Cortex?

Seeking Health Adrenal Cortex contains only the adrenal cortex, without the medulla that produces adrenaline, and some people find it 'calmer'. Ancestral Beef Adrenal contains the whole adrenal gland (cortex and medulla) plus 375 mg of liver, making it the complete nutritional version with extra B vitamins, vitamin A and haem iron. If you are very sensitive to stimulation, start with Adrenal Cortex; if you want the nutritional approach with liver, choose Ancestral.

Is beef liver actually safe, and what about vitamin A?

Yes, liver from healthy animals is safe. A common misconception is that the liver 'stores' toxins; in fact the liver filters and processes them so they can be eliminated via bile and urine, and what it mainly stores is vitamins (A, B12, folate, copper, iron) and glycogen. Liver from healthy, grass-fed animals from New Zealand, where no growth hormones and hardly any antibiotics are used, is one of the most nutritious foods there is. Liver does, however, contain a lot of natural vitamin A (retinol): 3 capsules contain 1,125 mg of liver, roughly 550 to 1,300 µg of vitamin A, so below the reference intake; at 6 capsules you exceed it. So do not combine it with other high-dose vitamin A supplements or several liver-containing products at full dose at the same time, and if you are pregnant discuss your total vitamin A intake with your midwife.

Is this suitable during pregnancy, alongside medication or for children, and can I combine it?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, only in consultation with your doctor or midwife. Do not combine with corticosteroids or other adrenal preparations without consulting a professional. For children, only on the advice of a therapist. Popular combinations: Beef Adrenal in the morning with Beef Liver or Beef Organs; not at full dose together with Beef Thyroid without supervision. Ancestral products are food and can be used alongside each other and alongside other supplements. Two things to bear in mind: many products contain liver, so add up the total amount of liver and keep an eye on your vitamin A intake (see the question about liver); and it is better not to take all the hormone-containing glands (thyroid, adrenal, testicle) at full dose at the same time. A popular base is Beef Liver or Beef Organs plus Beef Bone Marrow; to that you add a specific organ for your goal.

Does this product contain allergens and how should I store it?

The product contains beef (and beef gelatine as the capsule) and is therefore not suitable for vegetarians, vegans or people with a beef allergy (alpha-gal). Beyond that it contains no gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, egg, fish, shellfish, sugar, colourings, preservatives or fillers. New Zealand and Australia are officially free of BSE (mad cow disease). Store the jar closed in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a kitchen cupboard; it does not need to go in the fridge. Freeze-dried organ powder attracts moisture, so close the jar immediately after use and leave the silica gel sachet inside. Unopened and sealed, the product keeps until the date on the label; once opened, preferably use it up within 3 months.
