Astaxanthin is a carotenoid made by plankton, algae and some plants, to resist sunlight and oxygen. Doctor's Best Astaxanthin - AstaReal® derives from the green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, or Blood Rain Algae, providing a natural form of astaxanthin. These algae contains the highest concentration of astaxanthin. A particularly powerful antioxidant, astaxanthin evidences unique properties.

The human body does not itself produce astaxanthin. Therefore, intake through food or supplements is essential. Astaxanthin provides a red color. Animals consuming plenty of astaxanthin also adopt this color, such as lobsters and shrimps, but also flamingos with their pink feathers.
